Production
Paul Kruger
Paul Krüger - Executive Producer / DOPPaul Krüger started his camera career in 1990 and not long after that joined the SABC. In 1996 he decided to go freelance as camera operator and DOP and started his own company, Eschol Video Productions. During the past 19 years Paul established himself in the world of producing and directing of different TV programmes and documentaries. Hartiwood Films was born in 2006 and we were one of the first companies to import the RED ONE camera from America. Because of this, Paul could go a step further in the producing of different projects. Because of the RED ONE and the excellent post-production facilities at Hartiwood Films, we are ready to do pioneers work in the film industry in South Africa.Working with RED is a whole new Camera Game. We were very fortunate to shoot the whole film on RED! Red Pro-Primes lenses Set was used, picture quality was outstanding and it gave you that true cinematic experience. We tried to use natural light where we could! And just filled in where necessary, hardly any tungsten light where used and only hmis and daylight florescent. On the big choreographic dance scenes 2 REDS where used as well as a 10 meter JIB operated by Johan Strydom and Sean King. We decided to shoot the small scenes with a jib arm which made it easy to move around but still gave us that slight movement which was required for our shooting style. Sound engineer was Leon Rivas. We were uncertain about the Reds Quality on sound, we decided to record on a separate sound track which could be used for post sync, but which we did not use at all. The whole film was shot on location 4 months prior to the actual shoot schedule, with a P2 camera and just the core crew standing in as actors. This gave us a good indication how things would go in terms of location choices, lighting setups, shot planning, as well as durations.

Director's Notes
The Director's NotesBy what criterion does one measure what makes a good Musical film? And on top of that, an Afrikaans musical film? To top that, the first one in thirty odd years...What are the ingredients? How ferocious does one stir the broth, how long to simmer and once its dished up, what is the perfect table to lay it on and which flowers will show it off just right? These are some of the many questions I asked myself when I approached the project. There was very little advice or expertise to be sourced in South Africa, a country to which the musical film genre is something of an enigma, the most recent musical films to be produced here being "Sing vir die Harlekyn" and "Sarafina". After gathering some inspiration and tips by watching and studying American Musical movies, oldies and some of the many ones made recently, I looked inwards and to those in my close proximity...my family and friends: good, solid Afrikaners, some "baster Rooinekke" and a few Jewish, Hungarian, Irish and Austrian pals who cherish a complicite with the Afrikaner sensibility. What would they like to see and hear but mostly... what would my mother? Once I established the answers to these questions my life became much simpler as I ploughed through a wealth of Afrikaans popular songs from 1910 up the present with the team of core creatives on board. When the songs were all measured, weighed and finally chosen, we weaved a story line in and around these songs that best told the story of our happy go lucky central character Liefling! It was a joy to capture her gentle and light spirit and her journey of falling in love and eventually settling into her self and womanhood.I was privileged to be surrounded by a fearless technical and creative team, each individual and department showed such incredible talent, initiative, inspiration, drive and passion, making my job so much easier. I stand in great awe of them all, especially our musical director Johan Heystek and choreographer Raymond Theart. Both taught me so much about music! My greatest joy was working with an enormous cast(immensely daunting at first)of remarkably unique and talented actors. It was wonderful to watch them give it their all under pressured time constraints, intense weather conditions, dealing with challenging costumes and props and at the same time having to sing and dance like there's no tomorrow! They did brilliantly. Steering the ship that is "Liefling-Die Movie" was very stressful for me but at the same time I have never laughed so much on a set! I was moved by the pure energy and daily drive of a committed team to tell our humble feel-good story in the best way we possibly could. I hope "Liefling" provides audiences with fun, escapism, glamour, nostalgia and a renewed intrigue with the Afrikaans language, spoken or sung.Brian WebberDirector
